The Bradman Foundation is pleased to announce the recent partnership with the University of Wollongong (UoW). The first initiative of the partnership is to expand the existing Foundation scholarship program to include The University of Wollongong (UoW) Bradman Foundation Scholarship Scheme. The Foundation and UoW will offer one undergraduate scholarship to an Indian student each year. The scholarship is granted for the duration of their undergraduate program and at the end of each year another scholar will be chosen.

The scholarship, named in honour of the world’s greatest-ever cricketer, Sir Donald Bradman, is for an Indian student to study in Australia at UOW.

The Premier and Gilchrist were joined by UOW Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Wellings CBE and Bradman Foundation Vice-Chair Dr Peta Seaton for the scholarship launch in Mumbai as part of an annual visit to India by UOW executives to talk to potential research partners and students.

UOW has combined with the Bradman Foundation, a charitable trust established in 1987 with the blessing of Sir Donald Bradman to promote cricket as a cultural and sporting force, to offer its first international scholarship for undergraduate study at one of Australia’s leading universities.

It is part of a wider partnership agreement between UOW and the Bradman Foundation to educate, inspire and develop young people. This new scholarship is in addition to the Foundation’s well- established ‘Bradman Scholarship’ for students who are Australian citizens studying at Australian universities.

Gilchrist said he was greatly honoured to launch the international scholarship connected with the Bradman Foundation in India.

“Sir Donald Bradman left an enduring legacy to the game of cricket with his incredible achievements, and Indian cricket fans understand that as well as anyone,” Gilchrist said. “Sir Donald, through the establishment of the Foundation that bears his name, also had a vision that through education and the advancement of youth, cricket could be strengthened and advanced.

“The University of Wollongong Bradman Foundation Scholarship has been established to provide that opportunity for educational advancement of a young Indian person, and I am extremely proud to have been asked to launch it.

“I am particularly pleased the scholarship is not based just on academic performance. We are looking for a well-rounded young person who will be able to fulfil Sir Donald’s vision.”

The scholarship will be awarded each year to an Indian student – male or female – who has completed secondary school and who demonstrates a combination of academic, sporting, personal and social skills, as well as strong participation in cricket.

The UOW Bradman Foundation Scholarship provides a golden opportunity for educational advancement of young Indian students by waiving 50% of tuition fees for the duration of their chosen degree – making the scholarship worth many thousands of dollars.

Mr O’Farrell said he was delighted to be involved in the launch of a project that helped to underline the close connections between Australia and India. “Our two nations have many connections, but cricket and education are two of the strongest. This scholarship combines the two by giving an Indian student a wonderful opportunity to come to our State and study at one of our leading universities,” Mr O’Farrell said. “I congratulate the University of Wollongong and the Bradman Foundation on this initiative.”

UOW Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Wellings CBE said the UOW Bradman Scholarship was an indication of the growing strength of the University’s ties with India, as well as with the Bradman Foundation.

“This is an extremely important initiative from the University’s point of view,” Professor Wellings said. “It gives us a chance to help fulfil Sir Donald’s vision for the advancement of youth and cricket while also offering a great opportunity for an Indian student to come to Australia to study at our university and become involved in the Bradman Foundation.

“We believe this is a wonderful opportunity for a young person from India who is passionate about cricket and passionate about learning.”

Bradman Foundation Chairman Dr Maurice Newman AC said the Foundation welcomed the opportunity to expand our scholarship program and was delighted to be a partner with the University of Wollongong, an outstanding educational and innovative organisation.

“The Bradman Foundation was established to promote cricket as a valuable cultural and social force in the community,” Dr Newman said. “This scholarship fulfils that objective by providing an opportunity each year for a young person from India to come to Australia to study at an excellent university and learn about another country.

“The scholarship-holders will have the opportunity to become involved in the Bradman Foundation, who will become future ambassadors for us. It is an exciting project to be involved in, and we look forward to what I am sure will be a wonderful association between the Foundation and the University of Wollongong Bradman Scholarship holders for many years to come.”
