A dominant performance with bat and ball has helped the Lendlease Breakers secure a home final, with NSW winning by ten-wickets in their WNCL clash at Manuka Oval today (November 22).
The victory means the Breakers finish the regular season on top of the ladder, and will play the South Australian Scorpions at Hurstville Oval next Sunday (November 29).
After Victoria won the toss and elected to bat five of the Breakers bowlers took wickets during a dominant performance, with four claiming two or more scalps..
While the Vic Spirit started well, they fell from 1-65 to 5-69 in the space of three overs, with the collapse triggered by a damaging spell from Breakers stalwart and player of the match, Sarah Aley.
Aley (3-21) claimed the key wicket of Meg Lanning, who edged a ball that richochetted off the head of Alyssa Healy and was caught by Lauren Smith.
Healy left the field for the remainder of the innings as a precaution, with captain Alex Blackwell taking the wicketkeeping gloves.
Blackwell more than held her own behind the stumps, taking two catches and a stumping as the Breakers bowlers tore through the Victorian batters.
Lauren Smith (2-23), Rene Farrell (2-24), Lauren Cheatle (2-20) and Laura Marsh (1-19) were the other wicket takers as the Victorians were bowled out for 132.
Despite the head knock, Healy opened the batting with Rachael Haynes as the Breakers looked to chase down the total.
The pair both hit half centuries as they chased down the Victorian total in 25 overs. Haynes (63no) hit 13 fours during her innings, while Healy (65no) hit nine.
Next weekend will be the Breakers’ 20th WNCL finals appearance, as the team aims to equal the St George rugby league club’s record of 11-straight domestic premierships.
