Sydney Sixers win the Champions League

The Sydney Sixers have won the 2012 Karbonn Champions League after a dominating display over the Highveld Lions at Johanneburg’s New Wanderers Stadium.

Set a target of just 121 after the Sixers bowlers skittled the Lions’ batting line-up, the Sixers stunned the home crowd as they chased down the runs with ten wickets in hand and seven overs to spare.

The tournament’s highest run-scorer and winner of the golden bat, Michael Lumb, was unstoppable for the Sixers, scoring 82 runs off 42 balls and combining with captain Brad Haddin (37 off 33 balls) to lead the Sixers to victory without the loss of a wicket.

The Sixers were just too good for the Lions with the bat and ball, taking four wickets inside the first four overs to leave the home side reeling at 4/10 after being sent into bat.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Brad Haddin surprised the Lions’ openers as he opened the bowling with the spin pair of Nathan McCullum and Stephen O’Keefe – producing immediate results.

When the Lions’ Gulam Bodi smashed the third ball of the match for six it looked as though the Sixers may have made the wrong decision, but that’s where the joy ended for the Lions – Bodi fell off the next ball and their batting line-up crumbled.

Josh Hazlewood (3-22) then continued the onslaught in the third over, taking a double wicket maiden, including the scalp of the tournament’s third highest run-scorer, Neil McKenzie, for a duck, to put the Sixers well on top.

O’Keefe (1-11 off four overs) was not to be outdone however, bagging the wicket of the Lions’ captain Alviro Peterson and silencing the home crowd.

Jean Symes provided some hope for the Lions, producing a fighting innings of 51 off 46 balls to keep his side in the game and with some chance of producing an upset win.

But it was never going to be enough, with the Sixers gliding to victory and continuing their perfect unbeaten record for the series to the very end.
