Former NSW Blues and Australian opening batsman, Phil Jaques, will re-join Cricket NSW this week as a Pathway Coach and Assistant Coach for the NSW Blues.
Originally from the Illawarra region, Jaques was a decorated player. He scored 902 Test match runs, including three centuries, as well as 16,035 First Class runs in 200 matches at an average of 48.29.
A Cricket Australia Level Three Accredited Coach, Jaques will be an assistant to NSW Blues Head Coach Trevor Bayliss and will work closely with the NSW Youth teams.
He will also serve as a specialist coach for the Cricket NSW Academy Programs, mentoring players based in Sydney and regional NSW, as well as providing support to Sydney Grade clubs.
Cricket NSW State Cricket General Manager David Moore said Jaques was an excellent addition to the NSW coaching staff.
“Phil Jaques has enjoyed a very long and successful First Class career. He has accumulated a lot of knowledge over this time which he can now pass on to players training in Cricket NSW Academy Programs all over the State. As a cricketer he was known for his professionalism and attention to detail, and he will set a fine example for the next generation of NSW players,” he said.
Cricket NSW Chief Executive Andrew Jones welcomed Jaques back to the organisation.
“We are very fortunate to have a player of Phil Jaques’ calibre return to Cricket NSW. We believe that he has the skills and desire to be a very successful coach and his presence greatly enhances the quality of our Academy and Pathway programs,” said Jones.
Phil Jaques made his First Class debut for NSW in the 2000/01 season. He scored 5,350 runs in the Sheffield Shield with a highest score of 240 not out, along with 2,320 runs in Domestic One Day cricket where his top score was 171 not out. He was also a member of two Sheffield Shield and two One Day Cup winning teams, and won the Steve Waugh Medal in 2005/06.
He made his Test debut in 2005, going on to play 11 Tests and six One Day Internationals for Australia.
Jaques retired from the NSW Blues at the end of the 2011/12 season when he moved to England to continue his career in County Cricket.
