NSW Blues player Peter Nevill joined an elite club today, becoming just the second NSW wicketkeeper in history to score more than 200 runs in a First Class innings.
Nevill made 235 not out in NSW’s first innings total of 9-576 declared against Tasmania at Blundstone Arena in Hobart.
The only other NSW wicketkeeper to score more than 200 runs in a First Class match is Billy Murdoch, who struck 321 against Victoria in 1881/82.
Other wicketkeepers who have scored a double century in a Sheffield Shield fixture are:
- Wayne Phillips – 213no for South Australia vs Tasmania in Adelaide (1986/87)
- Adam Gilchrist – 203no for Western Australia vs South Australia in Perth (2001/02)
Nevill is the fifth NSW batsman to score a double century against Tasmania, following in the footsteps of Victor Trumper (292no), Herb Collins (282), Steve Waugh (206) and Michael Bevan (216 and 201no).
On his way to the double ton, Nevill added 180 runs for the eighth wicket with Stephen O’Keefe who was out for 99.
This was the highest eighth wicket stand for NSW since 1927/28 when Bert Oldfield and Charlie Nicholls added 204 against Victoria in Sydney.
It was also a new eighth wicket record for NSW against Tasmania, breaking the previous mark of 175 set by Victor Trumper and Jim Kelly in Sydney back in 1898/99.
