Bradman Oval was the host for a new world record on 7 May.

Mary Poppins World Record at Bradman Oval

2115 people came to the oval to claim the record for the most people holding umbrellas aloft in the shape of Mary Poppins. The existing world record is 1026 people and was set in Serbia in 2009.

Soon after, another possible record was broken – the largest hokey pokey dance held in Australia, if not the world. The successful day drew to close with around 600 people staying to watch the Disney classic Mary Poppins on a big screen on the oval, followed by a fireworks display.

Mary Poppins’ creator Pamela L. Travers lived in Bowral from 1908-17 and her time here is believed to have been the inspiration for the novel and character Mary Poppins. It is hoped that a bronze statue of Mary Poppins will be erected in Glebe Park, just behind the International Cricket Hall of Fame.
