Cricket New South Wales (CNSW) and Cricket Australia (CA) today announced the appointment of leading cricket journalist Malcolm Conn to the newly created role of Senior Manager – External Communications, NSW.
Conn joins Australian cricket having been one of the most widely respected cricket journalists in the country for more than twenty years. A Walkley Award winner, he is currently the Chief Cricket Writer at News Corp Australia and before that time was Chief Cricket Writer at The Australian from 1992 to 2011.
In the new role, Conn will lead the Cricket NSW communications function and serve as the day-to-day communications leader for Cricket Australia in New South Wales.
Conn will sit on the leadership team at CNSW, while forming a key part of the national Cricket Australia communications team managed by Jonathan Rose.
Commenting on the appointment, CNSW Chief Executive Officer Andrew Jones said Conn will bring unique experience and insight to the role and help lift cricket’s presence in Australia’s largest and most competitive media market.
“We are delighted that Malcolm will be joining Australian cricket,” Jones said.
“His experience will benefit the game in many ways. He is widely respected and will bring to the role an intimate understanding of the media combined with extensive knowledge of and a deep passion for the game.
“The appointment is a huge win for cricket and will help cement our status as Australia’s favourite sport.”
Cricket Australia’s Executive General Manager – Media, Communications & Marketing, Ben Amarfio, said he was “thrilled” to have Conn join the organisation.
“We are obviously thrilled to have someone of Mal’s experience working in Australian cricket,” said Amarfio.
“We know he will make a significant contribution to our aim of continually growing media coverage of our sport in NSW and across the country.
“The creation of this joint role between Cricket Australia and Cricket NSW is a clear demonstration of how collaborative Australian cricket now is.”
Conn jumped at the chance to join with the ICC Cricket World Cup coming next summer.
“My passion for cricket was cemented as a school boy when I was among 85,000 roaring fans who watched Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson demolish the West Indians at the MCG on Boxing Day 1975,” said Conn.
“Over the past 30 years I have had great privilege of covering the Australian cricket team in action at home and away against every Test-playing nation.
“I now look forward to bringing that passion and experience to my new role enhancing Australia’s favourite national sport.”
