With fourteen players unavailable due to commitments with the Australian Test and One-Day sides or injury, Cricket NSW selectors have recalled wicketkeeper-batsman Daniel Smith to the squad of 12 that will face Victoria in the Ryobi Cup on Sunday at North Sydney Oval (11-15am start).
The match will raise awareness of cancers in men and a Call To Arms. Cricket players from the RTA SpeedBlitz Blues will don a yellow armband during the game to help raise awareness and vital funds for men’s cancer – a disease that effects 1 in 2 men by the age of 85.
“Australian men are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer and less likely to survive their diagnosis,” Dr Andrew Penman, CEO at The Cancer Council NSW said. “That’s why it’s crucial for sportsmen from all clubs to band together and help raise funds for research and support programs for men and what better way to do this than whilst out playing the game they love”
Smith, who missed out on a contract with the RTA SpeedBlitz Blues this season, will play as a batsman. He is also the wicketkeeper and Assistant Coach with the Sydney Thunder in the KFC T20 Big Bash League and played in all matches for New South Wales in the recent Champions League in India.
The burly right-hander has been brought into the squad to add some boundary hitting ability to the batting line-up.
Manly batsman Tim Cruickshank has also been drafted into the squad after making his First class debut against the same opponents at the SCG this week. He has previously played in one Ryobi Cup match for the RTA SpeedBlitz Blues, with an appearance against Queensland last season.
All rounder Sean Abbott will play his first Ryobi Cup match of the season, while Luke Doran is retained in the squad after performing well in game one against South Australia.
The squad is :
Stephen O’Keefe ( Captain )
Sean Abbott
Tim Cruickshank
Luke Doran
Josh Hazlewood
Moises Henriques
Simon Katich
Nicolas Maddinson
Peter Nevill
Ben Rohrer
Daniel Smith
