Cricket NSW have a new initiative this year to offer work experience and an Internship Program to young people who are keen on ‘getting their foot in the door’ of the sports industry.
Julie Stafford from Cricket NSW started the DO initiative:
Becoming part of our Development Officer Select program is a highly prized opportunity to get your foot in the door of the sports industry, complete work experience hours that can count towards a university degree and make a difference to your personal development.
The Program is a called the Development Officer Select Program. The DO Select Program offers training to students in the activities of the Game Development Department and assigns them to a Development Manager and Census Region close to where they live. This initiative is open to students in Year 11 and above to assist the Game Development Department with a range of cricket activities such as:
- Delivery of school programs, ie School Heroes Programs
- Delivery of T20 Blast Gala Days
- Attending Festivals and local community events
- Assisting local Clubs with junior coaching
In July this year, Cricket NSW invited over 50 young people to the SCG for a training day led by Cameron Tredell the National Coach Education Trainer from Cricket Australia. The Bradman Foundation was asked to select some students in the area to take part in the program.
The “Bowral Boys” selected for this program were Roddy Acton, Oliver Cheatle, Alex Debs, Jack Edwards, Jacob Fairall, Max Moran, and Zac Moran. Bradman Foundation Education Officer, Cindy Pryma, is noted in saying:
The Foundation is keen to promote pathways in cricket and the sporting industry. There are a great deal of jobs that support the elite players and we feel it is important to nurture the development and interest of students at this level. The boys did the Highlands proud by participating with others much older than themselves. They facilitated a fantastic program with enthusiasm and confidence. The Development Officer program is a great Cricket NSW initiative and we are excited to be a part of it.
The boys will now be working closely with the Bradman Foundation and Paul Brockley the Cricket NSW Development Manager for the Illawarra Region. The first Cricket NSW Clinic will be run during the spring school holidays. Coaches from Cricket NSW and the Development Officers will run the three day clinic on 30 Sep-2 Oct on Bradman Oval. The clinic is for beginners through to club players to brush off their skills for the upcoming cricket season. More information can be found on the Bradman website (www.bradman.com.au).
